Great Books?
Dave just finished Dan Brown's "Deception Point" - he describes it as drivel - but then, he enjoys Margaret Atwood. And Kurt Vonnegut.
He has now started Carl Haaisen's "Stormy Weather". How appropriate with the inbound hurricane season?
Please tell us. If you were leaving to cross the Atlantic Ocean for 3 weeks, what book MUST you take?

Great to see you both last weekend (and a bit) ago, I'm wading in a little late on the book thing, but "Issac's Storm' by Erik Larsen.
He does a great job of taking an event and time
and presenting the characters surrounding the event. His research is impeccable. His first book "Isaac's Storm" was an interesting look at the deadliest hurricane in American history (Sept. 1900 in Galveston Texas). Isaac Cline was the resident meteorologist for the US Weather Bureau. Using Cline's own telegrams, letters and reports Larson weaves a great story of an fascinating time and event.
Published by Vintage Books the ISBN number is 0-375-70827-8.
His second book "Devil In The White City' was also great, set in Chicago at the time leading up to the World's Fair, early 1900's. Also very well put together.
All the best, be safe.

Something Heavy: Barney's Version. This is not the most uplifting book but its quite clever. My only complaint is that you need a Yiddish to English dictionary to fully understand the storyline.
Something Light: Anything in C. S. Forrester's Hornblower series (as Chis knows - great GO train reading). I can't think of anything more appropriate to read while sailing...

If I were crossing the Atlantic, I would take 'the kite runner'. It is a great book.....but since you could actually finish it in a day (it's that good) you may want to bring another....... OR a bunch of crappy stuff like people and star and all that to catch up on the stuff you never read....

If I was leaving to cross the Atlantic Ocean for 3 weeks I'd be writing a book instead of taking one. But I'd also bring a few in case I got writer's block, God forbid. I'm enjoying everything Isabel Allende has ever written these days. In my opinion, perfect for a hammock swaying in the ocean breeze.

If you are serious regarding books to read, and you have not already read these, I definitely think you should take a copy of "Papillon" by Henri Charriere, he also has a sequel entitled "Banco". Godspeed on your voyage across the Atlantic. The thought of open water for three weeks and no dry land is very daunting.
Take care

We think that you should take the Lemony Snicket series of 11 books. We are reading #5 and #6 and can't put them down. Chris says Life of Pi too. Jim says The Horn of a Lamb (we can lend it to you), also Hotel New Hampshire is always good. Jo has to think on this one....hmmm.
Lots of love
