N18.2 W64.6 Santa Maria Bay, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands
We intended to leave Soper’s Hole Marina early to get as far toward Puerto Rico as possible, but we had issues leaving the marine. They hadn’t recorded the meters for water and power at our slip when we arrived, so how could theuy figure out what to charge, blah, blah, blah. We finally got away at 11am with no wind. Given our late departure, we decided that an anchorage on the north coast of St Thomas would be best, but that meant going to Cruz Bay on St John to clear customs. Easier said than done. We were about to drop anchor in Cruz Bay when a local fisherman told us that there was so much crap on the bottom that we would likely foul our anchor. So we went to Caneel Bay, picked up a mooring, and dinghyed back to Cruz Bay. We returned to the boat, and got under way in shifty winds. The best part of the day was discovering Santa Maria Bay, an isolated bay in an idyllic setting. Not a bay to be visited in northerly winds, but it was blowing southwest today. It was picturesque, white sand beach lined with palm trees. We slept well and planned for an early departure for Puerto Rico.
